How can a therapeutic injection help you?

A common cause of pain in the musculo-skeletal system is inflammatory change which can occur due to wear and tear, usage, or as a result of a particular incident such as an impact, twisting, pulling, potentially any kind of trauma.
These inflammatory changes can be as a result of osteo-arthritis or soft tissue conditions such as bursitis, tendinosis and tenosynovitis affecting the tendons, tendon sheaths, joints and joint capsules.
If the cause of the pain is inflammatory, an anti-inflammatory will directly and effectively treat the inflammatory changes, also acting as a powerful painkiller.
Symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis can also be eased with therapeutic injections.

Therapeutic injections can treat:

  • Bursitis (inflammation of the bursa – a cushioning structure)
  • Tendinosis (inflammation of the tendon itself)
  • Tenosynovitis (inflammation of the tendon sheath)
  • Focal inflammatory changes- to soft tissues or joints.
  • Symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Osteoarthritic symptoms.
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • Fibromas on the hand/ foot etc.

Which injection is most suitable for me?

Three types of injections are offered at Wolds Medical:

  • Cortisone steroid injections
  • Hyaluronic injections (Durolane®)*
  • Arthrosamid®**

These provide different benefits, please click on individual tabs for details.

Cortisone injections are useful for inflammatory conditions relating to muscles, tendons and some joint issues.

Hyaluronic injections (Durolane®)* are used for arthritic joints to ease the associated pain and stiffness.

Arthrosamid®** is a longterm treatment for arthritic knees, delaying the need for a knee replacement, potentially for years.

Your appointment

You will be given information prior to your appointment which is very important for you to read in full. On attendance, Richard will discuss your symptoms with you, carry out a preliminary ultrasound assessment and administer the therapeutic injection appropriately. (If an injection is not deemed appropriate for any reason, you will be refunded for the injection portion of your payment)

If required you can book to have both Hyaluronic injections (Durolane®) and Steroid done together – this is an additional £50 for 1 site or £75 for 2 sites

*Durolane is a registered trademark ofBioventus LLC
**Arthrosamid is a registered trademark of Contura International A/S.

You will be advised to wait 20 minutes before leaving the building as a precaution in case you experience (an uncommon) post injection reaction.

A steroid injection is a powerful anti-inflammatory which, when delivered with pinpoint accuracy, under ultrasound guidance can provide rapid, effective relief from the pain and limitation of inflammatory changes, especially within the muscles and tendons of the musculoskeletal system.

It is not just a pain-killer but actively reduces the level of inflammatory change, potentially resolving it completely.

Cortisone, although helpful with chronic issues, is cost-effective and particularly useful for when the problem is acute or when you need immediate relief from the debilitating effects of a more longstanding condition.
